Why has an election been called and what happens now?

Why has an election been called and what happens now?

While May has consistently ruled out an early vote since becoming prime minister without an election previous year, her majority of just 17 lawmakers in the House of Commons makes her position in Parliament precarious.

Before holding the election, May must first win the support of two-thirds of the parliament in a vote on Wednesday.

A snap election "would catch the Labour Party in its worst condition since the early 30s, and with its least credible leader ever".

"As she set out, this election offers the chance to have certainty, continuity, and strong and stable leadership in the country and in Westminster as we bring into effect the decision made in last June's referendum to leave the European Union".

Last year, Cameron, a campaigner for the Remain side, resigned a mere day after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union on June 23 and the party elected May as the new leader.

Mrs May says that the experience of other political parties "playing games" over the triggering of Article 50 made her concerned that they would jeopardise the success of Brexit negotiations by threatening to block the deal she eventually achieves in Brussels.

May's Conservative Party is way ahead of the main opposition Labour Party in opinion polls.

The vote for Brexit last June brought tensions between Corbyn's team and the more centrist MPs to a head after the leader - a long-time eurosceptic - was accused of sabotaging the campaign to stay in the European Union, the party's official position.

The Royal College of Midwives also called for promise to invest in NHS in response to the general election announcement.

New York City to Uber: Let People Tip Your Drivers
That said, other respondents still tip what they want regardless of suggested tip amounts or the presence of a "no tip" option. While the TLC has been careful not to name specific companies, the guild clearly designed its rule with Uber in mind.

If we go by the polls of voting intentions, May's Conservative Party looks set to increase its majority in parliament-it now holds 330 seats in the 650-member parliament, and poll projections imply that it could gain 50 more in the upcoming vote.

Peter Lamb, Labour leader of Crawley Borough Council, said: "Suspect polls will narrow as we head towards GE as LAB-switchers realise they're out of time and alternative routes for taking on the Tories".

Standing outside her Downing Street office, May said she had been reluctant about asking parliament to back her move to bring forward the poll from 2020.

"Because what they are doing jeopardises the work we must do to prepare for Brexit at home and it weakens the Government's negotiating position in Europe".

"I'm not going to be calling a snap election", she said, The Guardian reports.

"I welcome the Prime Minister's decision to give the British people the chance to vote for a government that will put the interests of the majority first".

"This election is your chance to change the direction of our country", pro-EU Liberal Democrats leader Tim Farron said of the announcement.

In her speech she said that she had "only recently and reluctantly came to this conclusion" to hold election and was the "only way to govern with certainty".

Meanwhile, the party has said it has had 2,500 new members since Mrs May's announcement this morning, with total membership up to 91,110 - more than double its size in 2015. Mrs May will argue that a strong Tory victory is needed to give her a mandate for Brexit talks.
