'Fast and the Furious' on road to record global debut

Simultaneous release in China has resulted in great advantage for the latest instalment of the "Fast & the Furious" series. Before Star Wars, the record holder was Jurassic World with $316.7 million.

For all its strong showing, the manic muscle-car-filled film earned almost a third less in its first North American weekend than the previous Fast and Furious chapter, which drew US$147.2 million (RM648.34 million).

The latest "Fate of the Furious" cost $250 million and change to produce, that's a big difference from the "Furious 7" $190 million, and it also a big increase from the first film's $38 million budget.

Despite the film's global success, U.S. takings were down sharply on the previous movie.

Universal and Focus are owned by NBC Universal, the parent company of this station.

The Fate of the Furious might have received mixed reviews from the critics, but the audience seems to have loved it. The film passed the global $1 billion mark over the weekend ahead of its opening in Japan on April 21.

Tax Day demonstrators demand that Trump release tax returns
The organizers of Saturday's marches say more than 180 events are planned across 48 states and the District of Columbia. Protest organizers say Americans deserve to know about Trump's business ties and potential conflicts of interest.

The Fate of the Furious has numerous returning stars like Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris, but has added some new elements behind the camera in director F. Gary Gray and in front of the camera with Charlize Theron.

LAS VEGAS, NV - JUNE 22: The character Dominic Toretto's "Ice Charger" from the upcoming movie "Fast and Furious: Fast 8" is displayed at the Licensing Expo 2016 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center on June 22, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"It's a sign that a franchise built around muscle cars and odes to the importance of family is growing more global in scope", wrote Brett Lang, senior film and media editor for trade magazine Variety.

The film broke the record for biggest worldwide weekend ever, with $432.3 million. Said figure towers as the biggest weekend ever for the Fast & Furious franchise, surpassing the P98-M bow of 2015's Fast & Furious 7.

Back in the top 10, Fox and DreamWorks Animation's The Boss Baby placed No. 2 with $15.5 million for a domestic cume of $116.5 million and worldwide haul of $287.6 million. It is all due to the announcement that Universal made for the movie saying a ninth and tenth installments are going to happen for the years 2019 and 2021, respectively. It was forecast to place third and add $14 million, according to the analysts.
