North Korea displays submarine-based missiles for first time at military parade

Amid rising regional tensions, Pyongyang residents have been preparing for North Korea's most important holiday: the 105th birth anniversary of Kim Il Sung, the country's late founder and grandfather of current ruler Kim Jong Un.

The isolated nation is celebrating the 105th birthday on Saturday of its first leader, Kim Il Sun.

North Korean soldiers also rolled out another large rocket that appeared to be the size of an ICBM, but what a South Korean military analyst said hasn't been seen before.

Officials in Pyongyang said the country would "ruthlessly ravage" the USA if Washington opted for an attack in response to a North Korean weapons test. Counteractions would occur "in such a merciless manner as not to allow the aggressors to survive", the army statement said.

The North's leader, Kim Jong-un, attended the parade in the capital, Pyongyang, as a series of missiles, multiple launch rocket systems and rockets were on display, amid questions about US plans for the country and concerns about a possible sixth nuclear test.

Relations on the Korean peninsula are at breaking point after U.S. officials refused to rule out using military force against Kim Jong-un's relentless drive to bolster his military's nuclear arsenal.

Goose-stepping soldiers and marching bands filled the square, next to the Taedonggang River that flows through Pyongyang, in the hazy spring sunshine as tanks, multiple launch rocket systems and other weapons waited to parade. Also on display was a powerful midrange missile, which outside analysts call "Musudan", and which can potentially reach USA air bases in Guam.

Choe Ryong Hae, who some say is the second-most powerful official in North Korea, said in a speech that the country is ready to stand up to any threat posed by the United States.

1 dead, 3 hurt in Atlanta transit station shooting
One person was killed, while three others were wounded, according to authorities, in the incident on the Blue Line. According to a statement from Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority, the shooting happened about 4:30 p.m.

North Korea also paraded what appeared to be a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

"We will respond to an all-out war with an all-out war and a nuclear war with our style of a nuclear attack", Choe said during the parade in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, which was also attended by Kim Jong Un.

Other senior officials joining Kim at the podium included Kim Won Hong, who the South Korean government had said earlier this year was sacked from his job as state security minister, presumably over corruption. The country under his watch has been aggressively pursuing a goal of putting a nuclear warhead on an ICBM capable of reaching the continental United States.

As tensions heighten in the peninsula, China's foreign minister, Wang Yi, warned that confrontation between the USA and North Korea had escalated to such a point that "a military conflict may start at any moment".

The North's leader said in his New Year's message that the country has entered the final stage of preparing to launch an ICBM capable of hitting the US mainland.

Previously it had conducted two nuclear weapon tests previous year alone.

The U.S. Navy's strike group, led by the Carl Vinson aircraft carrier, is en route to waters around Korea in the Donald Trump administration's warning message to Pyongyang.
