LGBT Activists Say Chechen Gov't "Kidnapping" and "Torturing" Gay Men

LGBT Activists Say Chechen Gov't

Over 100 gay men have been reportedly kidnapped, detained, tortured, and some murdered in concentration-like facilities in Chechnya.

In Russia, there's already a ban on anything representing homosexuality, but if you ask the president of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, the alleged abuses are not possible since, for one, gay people don't exist there.

Natalia Poplevskaya of the Russian LGBT Network said "we are working to evacuate people", according to BBC. Two of them in the capital of Chechnya, Grozny, one of them in Argun - this is the first secret prison we discovered where LGBT people were detained, beaten, tortured and killed.

"We can only call on the Russian authorities to investigate the allegations", said Alexander Artemyev, from Amnesty International.

The detention and ill-treatment of over 100 gay men in Chechnya is extremely concerning. Kadyrov is a thug who publicly supports honor killings.

Stand by your worldwide human rights obligation to prohibit discrimination and to investigate and prosecute hate crimes, the most invidious form of discrimination.

"You can not arrest or repress people who just don't exist in the republic", Alvi Karimov, Kadyrov's press secretary, said.

The officials also seized his mobile phone, targeting his network of contacts regardless of whether they were gay or not. He even added that "if there were people like this in Chechnya, the authorities would not have to do this because their families would send them to a place from which they would not return". It was also said the police gave them electrical shocks and beat three of them to death, according Russian newspaper Novoya Gazeta. "We strongly urge the Minister and other world leaders to use whatever peaceful means they can to defend Chechen men' rights to self-expression, life and liberty".

A report by Pink News which included an interview with Tanya Lokshina of Human Rights Watch, revealed claims the gay men released from the concentration camps in Chechnya were "barely alive" after sustaining frequent and severe beatings. The State Department last week condemned the violence in a strongly worded statement, but American LGBT groups, including HRC and GLAAD, want to see the USA government do more.

Organizations like Amnesty International, Stonewall and Human Rights Campaign are leading the protests.

Last week, Kadyrov's spokesperson denied claims of gay men being detained, under the premise that gay men and women do not exist in the region.
