Funeral taking place in Montreal for HIV/AIDS researcher Dr. Mark Wainberg

A Bal Harbour coroner confirmed the Montreal scientist drowned off the shores of Miami after suffering an asthma attack.

CP24 has learned that Dr. Mark Wainberg was on vacation with his family when he disappeared into the water at a beach in Bal Harbour, Florida, an island east of Miami, police said.

He was best known for identifying 3TC (Lamivudine) as one of the first effective anti-viral treatments that helped extend the survival of HIV/AIDS patients nearly indefinitely.

Former president of the International AIDS Society Professor Mark Wainberg, a fierce critic of former president Thabo Mbeki's views on the pandemic, has died.

Bal Harbour Police's acting Chief Mike De La Rosa said beach goers were administering CPR when police arrived. At the time of his death, he was the head of AIDS research at Montreal's Jewish General Hospital and the McGill University AIDS Centre. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Kaur's determination towards finishing her job and her strength in coping up with a great loss is being praised by everyone. Reportedly, her editors knew it was her husband who was killed in the auto crash, but did not have the courage to tell her.

Friends and colleagues said Dr. Wainberg was fantastic about encouraging people in their research. He also served as president of the International AIDS Society from 1998 to 2000. His work identifying mutations in the HIV genome led him to believe replication of the virus could be blocked with medication and patients cured of HIV.

"Working hard with passion, that would describe him". His work contributed to saving millions of lives, ' said Michel Sidibé, Executive Director of UNAIDS.

In recent years, Dr. Wainberg had once again returned to the lab.

In 2015, Wainberg was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in 2015 "for having made the world a better place".

He is also an officer of the Order of Canada, an officer of the Ordre national du Québec, and a Chevalier in the Legion d'Honneur of France.
