After nude protest, Tamil Nadu farmers eat rice off road

Farmers of Tamil Nadu continued their strike at the Jantar Mantar on Wednesday.

The protests are removed by police after they stripped outside South Block.

Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P J Kurien on Tuesday asked the government to talk to drought-hit farmers of Tamil Nadu to end their agitation for crop loan waiver.

The farmers have been demanding Rs 39,000 Cr drought relief fund from the Centre for the state farmers.

As far back as January, the National Human Rights Commission had sent a notice to the state government after media reports that more than a 100 farmers in the state had either died from illness or killed themselves in the wake of crop failure.

Indian farmers - demanding the cancellation of land loan debts and government drought support - stripped naked in frustration outside parliament on Monday after being denied an audience with the prime minister. The protesting farmers were soon arrested.

On Friday, five Tamil Nadu farmers, including a woman, cut their hands, saying the Union government should wake up to their plight at least now.

In times when traditional rallies are failing to make an impact as dissent, agitators around the world have taken to protesting with their clothes off as a way to get their voices heard.

"Political parties are asking us to call off our protest because of the way we agitated outside the PMO".

Madras, the epicentre of the protests for an exhibition of barbarism (read Jallikattu) that is not held anywhere in the city, does not care about the farmers that supply its food.

For nearly a whole month, hundreds of farmers from the southern state have been camping in Delhi, demanding drought relief from the government. While they have met the Finance Minister, their demand to meet the PM is yet to be met with.

The primary demand is for loan waivers for all farmers in the state.

Meanwhile, during the brief hearing, senior counsel Shekhar Naphade, appearing for the Tamil Nadu government, raised the issue of severe drinking water crisis in the coastal state and alleged that Karnataka is not fulfilling its obligations.
