Spanish Navy Vessel challenged by Royal Navy in Gibraltar waters

Britain claims three miles of territorial sea around the Rock, but Spain insists the waters are Spanish and that its vessels are conducting routing operations.

Tensions soared after Gibraltar built an artificial reef in 2013 that Spain said hurt its fishermen.

Gibraltar's status after the UK withdrawal from the European Union is one of the pressing issues in Brexit talks, with the bloc suggesting that a separate agreement between London and Madrid would be required for any EU-UK deal provisions on Gibraltar.

British MEPs are reportedly being mocked at the European Parliament over the controversy sparked by claims Britain might go to war with Spain over Gibraltar. In an interview with Reuters on Monday, Gibraltar's chief minister, Fabian Picardo, said the passage was "clear Spanish bullying".

The Gibraltar economy relies on low taxation and freedom of movement for Spanish workers to cross the border to work.

A spokesman for Spain's foreign ministry said Spain did not recognize the waters as belonging to Gibraltar and the ship had been on a routine patrol.

For Louis Montegriffo, who runs a Gibraltar property firm, the Spanish involvement doesn't bode well.

Overall, Americans' belief that the media favors one party over the other is the highest it has been in more than 20 years. More than Democrats, Republicans have been contending - for more than a decade - that partisan media bias exists.

On 3 April, May laughed off suggestions of a war with Spain, saying: "What we are doing, with all European Union countries in the European Union is sitting down and talking to them".

"What may change is the relationship with the United Kingdom, which is our core market and perhaps highlighting difficulties early on in the negotiations may go some way to strengthen that relationship further still".

The incident comes after Spain's Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis told the United Kingdom to calm down after the former Conservative leader Lord Howard suggested Britain could go to war over the Rock. "Removal of the reference to Gibraltar would be a sign of good faith and good will", he said.

The patrol boat Infanta Cristina was told to exit the area by the Royal Navy unit stationed in the British overseas territory.

Addressing MEPs in Strasbourg, the EU Brexit negotiator said: "The sooner we agree the principles of an orderly withdrawal, the sooner we can prepare our future relations in trade".

"An illegal incursion, no, because for us it is the utilisation of our waters", a spokesman for the foreign ministry told Reuters.

Gibraltar has been in British hands since 1713 and the Treaty of Utrecht.
