Derek Jeter interested in purchasing the Marlins

The Miami Marlins are drawing in some interesting bidders to potentially buy the baseball team.

Jeter, the report said, is actively involved in discussions with Marlins president David Samson and has retained veteran Wall Street executive Gregory Fleming to represent his interests. But Stanton said he did get to know Jeter when the Yankees and Marlins played an exhibition series in Panama in 2014, and Stanton is well aware of Jeter's success as a player. The other groups include former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (!), who is teaming with Citigroup to finance his bid, and another group of unnamed businessmen who have the financial backing of Goldman Sachs, Fox Business is reporting. While Loria has apparently not yet accepted any ambassador position, it seems a deal to sell the Marlins is still very much in the works.

The current owner of the Marlins, Jeffrey Loria, has been the sole owner of the franchise dating back to 2002 when he purchased the club for $158 million.

You don't always know the validity of it, but I know he loves the game and I think he'd be a great owner, " Girardi said.

Marlins fans would likely embrace just about any new owner over Loria, who has gained a reputation as one of Major League Baseball's more reviled figures.

STATEWIDE-When you drive on any road or highway, there's one thing you're nearly certain to see: distracted drivers. Troopers said 13,994 crashes statewide past year - including 26 fatal crashes - involved some type of distraction.

Jeter is among three rumored groups looking to purchase the franchise, which has finished no higher than third place in the NL East since re-branding to the Miami Marlins prior to 2012. Even the Marlins, a team that draws more flies than fans.

NY businessmen Joshua Kushner - brother of President Donald J. Trump's son-in-law - was part of a previous group in discussions to buy the team.

While the Marlins could never get Derek Jeter on the field in uniform, they may soon have him in the owner's box.

At least one other group is in the running for a possible bid, these people add. In February, Forbes reported there was a $1.6 billion agreement set up to buy the franchise.
