Facebook resource to help spot misleading news

The tool is set to sit at the top of Facebook user News Feeds.

In the U.S., Facebook uses Snopes and PolitiFact, fact-checking organizations that are part of the Poynter International Fact-Checking Network, to help viewers sift through news stories.

Check the source. Ensure the story comes from a source with a reputation for accuracy.

With an election later this year - and some fake stories about refugees already popping up - this is a hot issue in Germany. Lack of evidence or reliance on unnamed experts may indicate a false news story.

"News Feed is a place for authentic communication", Facebook's VP of News Feed Adam Mosseri wrote in the announcement.

Machine learning will be used to help response teams identify fake news articles and help to limit its spread.

Among the ten "tips", users are asked to consider whether the story might be a joke.

6 remain hospitalized from hotel carbon monoxide poisonings
A total of 15 people were transported from the scene to two area hospitals, including six adults and nine children. Two county deputies and two hotel employees were also taken to hospitals after helping the unconscious victims.

Facebook is initially targeting users in the U.S., the UK, Germany, France, Italy, the Philippines, Indonesia, Taiwan, Myanmar, Brazil, Mexico, Columbia, Argentina, and Canada.

The guidelines include looking closely at website addresses to see if they are trying to spoof real news sites, and checking websites' "about" sections for more information.

It started flagging content after some critics questioned whether the spread of false articles, disguised as legitimate news content, may have influenced the outcome of the USA election - a charge that Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has dismissed.

The tool will offer tips on how to investigate the source of online reports and verify them against other news sources.

Facebook says it has worked in consultation with news literacy and fact-checking organisations, including Full Fact in the United Kingdom, to create the new guidance. "Check whether the source is known for parody, and whether the story's details and tone suggest it may just be for fun", the social network advises.

Mosseri said the majority of fake news on Facebook was created for financial rather than political gain and its impact could be reduced by limiting how often people see it and cutting off the supply of ad revenue. What do you think of Facebook's tips for spotting fake news? Our goal is to show people the content they will find most meaningful, and people want accurate news.
