Trump, Xi talks "significant" for US-China ties

Trump, Xi talks

But on Sunday, Trump warned that the United States was prepared to act alone if China did not take a tougher stand against North Korea and put more pressure on that country. "I thought last night's actions by the House and tightening up sanctions condemning North Koreat now sets the stage for the meeting the President is having this week with China's President to participate with us in tightening the economic levers on North Korea".

The US president, however, stopped short of talking about what possible measures Washington could take. "That is all I am telling you", Trump replied.

"I'm not going to tell you", Trump said when asked to clarify.

"On any given day we're waiting on another ballistic missile test [in North Korea]", she said, "Our goal is to say, what do we have to do to stop them?"

European shares touched a 16-month high .FTEU3 before paring gains as they tracked Asian shares higher in the wake of upbeat manufacturing data out of Europe and China.

Trump's relations with Beijing have been rocky since his January 20 inauguration, marred by the president's acceptance of a phone call from Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen and several other congratulatory phone calls from world leaders. However, Trump later reaffirmed the importance of USA relations with China, holding a number of phone calls with Xi.

The president recently said that if China does not take action on North Korea, the US will.

South Korea and Japan - both important players in the global economy and close USA partners - are under immediate threat, whereas China and Russia, North Korea's two northern neighbors, are global nuclear powers with their own interests in the dispute.

One bright spot from the survey of some 1,500 respondents was that the overall number of Americans who view China favourably has risen to a six-year high of 44 per cent, just below the 47 per cent who do not.

As he focuses on further consolidating power, Xi may find external distractions like a flare-up in US-China relations undesirable as he, like Trump, tries to address myriad domestic challenges.

Trump and Xi are also expected to discuss Chinese ambitions in the South China Sea, through which about $5 trillion in ship-borne trade passes every year, when they meet on Thursday and Friday.

Former US defense secretary, Ash Carter, who served under Barack Obama, said the US has "always had all options on the table". Although he did not offer further details, it appears his administration is considering imposing secondary boycotts on third-party corporations doing business with the North.

Administration officials argue Trump can use his "Art of the Deal" sales techniques to convince Xi that China needs the United States more than the United States needs China, especially when it comes to market access.

Earlier, Senator Payne said Australia's security was threatened by North Korea's continuing reckless, provocative and destabilising behaviour.

Mr Trump tempered expectations on outcomes for the summit and indicated he will focus on trade issues when he tweeted last Friday that the meeting "will be a very hard one in that we can no longer have massive trade deficits".

"They need to show us how concerned they are", Haley said of the Chinese.
