AOL and Yahoo to Become Oath

AOL and Yahoo to Become Oath

"We are going to be all-in, in terms of building awesome products and services around the biggest brands we have", Armstrong said.

Verizon got a bit of a discount on the Yahoo deal since Yahoo's recent security problems made headlines. The new name was first reported by Business Insider.

With Verizon moving ahead with its purchase of Yahoo, the telecom giant is thinking ahead to a broader rebranding of its new Internet properties, including AOL. Neither Yahoo nor AOL would comment to the tech site about Mayer's future.

Verizon bought AOL in 2015 for $4.4 billion, and announced it would pay $4.8 billion for Yahoo a year later. Company officials believe that the new division will allow it to make a splash in the digital advertising market.

Armstrong's latest remarks came as Verizon's acquisition of Yahoo hits speed bumps. Nevertheless Verizon confirmed the transaction was still on, and would be finished during the years second quarter.

Yahoo was set to be sold at $4.8 billion initially before two separate hacking attacks were discovered.

The U.S. Justice Department charged two Russian intelligence operatives along with a pair of hackers last month in connection with the cyberattacks. It doesn't. The remaining part of Yahoo, which is owned by Alibaba (15 percent) and Yahoo Japan (35.5 percent), has also been renamed to Altaba. The potential is there (Yahoo Mail, for example), but chances are the new Oath leadership will want to severe all ties to Yahoo's tarnished past and start anew. Marissa Mayer has already foregone her chief executive role at the company and her responsibilities have been handed over to board member Thomas McInerney.

In February, Verizon and Yahoo agreed to cut the acquisition price by $350 million and to split the cost of any legal liabilities resulting from the breaches.

Just like us, Roberts is also unclear about the reasons why it's named Oath.
