Gonzaga, N Carolina feature beastly bigs in NCAA title game

Gonzaga center Przemek Karnowski (24) dunks the ball over SC guard Sindarius Thornwell (0) and SC forward Chris Silva (30) during the second half of an NCAA Final Four basketball game, Saturday, April 1, 2017, in Phoenix.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs defeated the South Carolina Gamecocks 77-73 on Saturday at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona in the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament.

Gonzaga also closed in around SC star Sindarius Thornwell, frustrating the NCAA Tournament's leading scorer all game.

Each of the Bulldogs' top performers favored Nike signature sneakers, specifically two of LeBron James' models.

Collins caught a dish from Nigel Williams-Goss and set his feet for an open 3-pointer at the top of the key.

Gonzaga guard Nigel Williams-Goss turned the corner and dribbled into traffic, waited for three SC defenders to converge on him in the paint and then lobbed a little hook toward the rim despite Justin McKie smacking him on the left arm. P.J. Dozier showed out, scoring 17 points on 16 shots and Chris Silva and Duane Notice joined them in double figures with 13 and 10.

If he does go pro, his college career will end with the national championship game against North Carolina on Monday night.

Kennedy Meeks matched his career high with 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as North Carolina won 77-76. He did not return to the game before the end of the first half, but did to start the second. This comeback came up just short.

"I'm really happy for him", Karnowski said.

Gonzaga was not very good defensively in the first half in the eyes of their coach, despite holding SC to 13-of-35 shooting.

Federer to face Nadal for Miami crown
It would be like a throwback to 2005, the finals we played - 2004 we played the first time ever against each other here in Miami . I had some ups and downs, a bit of a roller coaster, but ultimately I think I put in a good performance.

All tournament, Zags coach Mark Few has rightfully cited defense as the reason Gonzaga keeps winning.

In a span of fewer than four minutes, the Gamecocks made 8-of-9 field goals and erased the entire lead.

SC forward Chris Silva answered with a three-point play of his own, igniting a 16-0 run for a 67-65 Gamecocks lead with 7:06 to go.

"I really did say that", Collin said.

"I felt like I stuck it", he said.

The Gamecocks, who were a seventh seed making its first Final Four appearance, had one last possession trailing by three, but Gonzaga fouled Sindarius Thornwell with 3.5 seconds left.

The last time they played each other in the NCAA Tournament was 2009, when the Tar Heels eliminated the Bulldogs in the Sweet 16. The big bearded one, Przemek Karnowski followed with two straight baskets, one off a nifty pass from Collins, and the Bulldogs appeared back in control.

Stanford (32-6) took a big hit when senior star guard Karlie Samuelson sprained her right ankle with about 4 1/2 minutes before halftime. after the Cardinal had taken an eight-point lead with a 13-1 run.

North Carolina's Kennedy Meeks, left, and Justin Jackson led the Tar Heels offensively with 25 and 22 points respectively.
