Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Pinwheels are the symbol of National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

The campaign is a collaborative way to understand that to prevent child abuse, everyone must be connected in communities and step up and speak out.

Community Leaders had booths and activities; fun for the entire family. "So we as a community and as individuals, we have a moral obligation to do everything we can to help our children in our state, in our city, and in our neighborhoods", Hartshorne said.

The subject of child abuse was a hard topic to speak out about 10 years ago, Morton said, but the community has "begun to turn a corner" and the child abuse reporting rate has increased by 200 percent in Klamath County over the past 10 years.

Nationally over 900,000 "Pinwheels for Prevention" have been displayed since the program launched in 2008.

Lastly, on April 27th, NCK CASA will host a dinner to recognize volunteers who donated their time to the program in 2016. "It is a tough documentary to watch, and due to the graphic content, we are requiring a parent, guardian or chaperone to attend with anyone under 18 because we don't want them walking away with no one to talk to".

Britney Spears announces new tour (& it may include United Kingdom dates!)
In the United States alone, she has sold more than 70 million albums, singles and songs, according to Nielsen Music. The former teen star will be jetting off to the Philippines in June and Israel in July for special performances.

"The pinwheel represents the happy, healthy childhood that all children deserve", she said. Child abuse and neglect is just as pervasive in wealthy families as it is in lower income families.

"The biggest thing we can do is just to get to know the kids in our community, next door and be a support to them, get to know their parents, find out what their needs are".

Baker Chapin reminded people attending the kickoff that more than 1,800 children in the United States are abused or neglected every day and that reports of child abuse were increasing in IL, including locally.

"We need to be keeping children safe and believing a child and listening to a child if they come to you and tell you about an abusive situation".

She said it's important to keep the conversation in the forefront.

"We work very hard to make sure people report abuse, and I think we are getting that information out there", said Hilton.
