White House tells Russia probers: Come see intel yourselves

One of the two White House aides reported by The New York Times on Thursday to have provided intelligence to House Intelligence Chair Devin Nunes was told by National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster that he would be removed from his job on the National Security Council just days before Nunes viewed the intelligence reports.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer last week cast doubt on the idea that the intelligence came from the White House, saying it "doesn't pass the smell test".

The attempt to derail the probe followed last week's hearing in which FBI Director James Comey gave damaging testimony for President Donald Trump, stating the agency has been investigating possible collusion between his election campaign and Russian Federation since last July, and there was no evidence to support Trump's tweets about being wiretapped, according to The New Yorker.

Officials said the reports consisted primarily of ambassadors and other foreign officials talking about how they were trying to develop contacts within Mr. Trump's family and inner circle in advance of his inauguration. Nunes has repeatedly insisted that the events of the past week were not part of a coordinated effort between himself and the White House. "The White House needs to answer if this was a case where they effectively tried to launder information through our committee".

Speaking on Capitol Hill Thursday, Schiff said he was "more than willing" to accept the White House offer to view new information. Cohen-Watnick had worked under Flynn at the Defense Intelligence Agency.

Adam SchiffAdam SchiffWhite House invites House Intel Dem to view documents Obama should testify before Senate Intelligence Committee Schiff: I don't think White House wants to see Yates testify MORE (D-Calif.) has been invited to view are the same mystery documents seen by Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.), the chairman of the House panel, Schiff said.

And the report said the intercepted communications are not related to the investigation into Russian influence, a point Nunes has stressed publicly.

If the officials in the Times story are telling the truth, it contradicts statements Nunes has made about his sources, the Washington Post reports. They spoke only on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the internal matter.

Cohen-Watnick and Rep. Nunes both served on the Trump transition team.
