Rouhani hints at 'big development in energy cooperations' between Russian Federation and Iran

"Resolution of complicated problems of the world requires cooperation between governments and scholars", Iranian government's official news website quoted President Rouhani as saying at a meeting with lecturers and students of the Lomonosov Moscow State University on March 28.

The talks were expected to center on Russian arms supplies to Tehran and on Russian investment in Iran's energy sector.

Economic ties have developed in parallel: bilateral trade almost doubled between January 2016 and January 2017, according to a statement by the Russian Ministry of Economic Development cited by the Sputnik news agency. Following the event, a source told Sputnik that Iran had not provided Russia's companies with any documents, making only verbal statements, adding that the terms of the contracts could be unveiled to the Russian companies in late March.

Russian Federation has been seeking to advance its nuclear, defense and agricultural and telecommunication cooperation with Iran over the past years.

Experts say the Middle East conflicts, particularly the Syrian issue, have recently brought the two neighbors closer for cooperation.

Senior Iranian defense officials have expressed interest in purchasing SU-30 fighter aircraft and T-90 tanks from Russian Federation.

President Vladimir Putin personally intervened with both Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman and Rouhani, leading to a landmark deal where Iran was allowed to boost oil production while Saudi Arabia agreed to a cut. Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will also hold separate discussions with Rouhani and several agreements are expected to be signed.
