Netflix Changing Star-Rating System With New Compatibility Measure

Netflix Changing Star-Rating System With New Compatibility Measure

The company says after running a series of user tests, they found a 200% increase in engagement with ratings using the thumbs up/thumbs down decision. "We made ratings less important because the implicit signal of your behavior is more important", Netflix VP of Product Todd Yellin said during a recent press briefing (via Variety).

Netflix will still show a percentage next to a title, but that number will represent how likely it is for you to enjoy that title. Presumably, the new thumbs up and thumbs down data will just replace the stars and users can judge whether to watch something based on that. The percentage will be based on what the users typically watch and the time they spend streaming each movie or series. So, instead of Netflix saying that it thinks you'll give some movie a five-star rating, it'll say that it's a 98 percent match with your viewing and rating history. When you rate movies and TV shows, you're helping us filter through the thousands of selections to get a better idea of what you'd like to watch.

Previously-given star rating will still be used to personalize the profiles of Netflix users, but the stars are disappearing from the interface altogether.

Ben argued earlier that it could be seen by some as a dumbing down of the system, and, at least for users actively engaging with the current star ratings, less informative in general. Although, the company has not revealed the exact release date of the new system.

Four Russians Among Dead In Istanbul Helicopter Crash
They were being transported to visit the company's factory near the town of Bozuyuk, some 120 miles south of Istanbul. Two pilots were on board, as well as two company executives, one Turkish and the other Russian, Eczacibasi said.

The change to the ratings system will happen in April, Yellin said.

One of the biggest changes that subscribers can expect to see is the disappearance of the five-star rating system.

You can expect Netflix's goals of bringing you viewer-specific content to stay the same; the only thing changing is that they're making it easier for you to let them know your thoughts, Roman emperor style.
