Majority of flights canceled; trains to halt during blizzard

American (AAL) cancelled all Tuesday flights at the NY airports and Boston Logan.

Several airlines have canceled almost 1,200 flights scheduled across the United States on Tuesday in advance of a winter storm that could dump 20 inches of snow across parts of New Jersey.

As of 9:30 a.m. Monday, Southwest has also already canceled 116 Wednesday flights.

Boston's Logan International has seen a total of 815 cancellations Tuesday, and Baltimore's Washington International has canceled around 500 flights. As of 8:00am Tuesday morning one flight from Springfield, Missouri to Chicago had been delayed by more than an hour, and another flight was canceled.

American Airlines, United Airlines and Southwest Airlines have shut down all Tuesday flight operations in and out of New York City airports.

United Airlines had pre-emptivly canceled some flights out of LaGuardia but other flights out of Newark were still scheduled. Hundreds of flights have been canceled in advance of an upcoming winter storm.

Flight-status tracking service FlightAware.com reports that 1,769 flights within, into or out of the U.S. Tuesday have been canceled as of 11 a.m. Monday.

Many airlines are waiving ticket change and re-booking fees. American Airlines: Customers traveling in and out of affected cities can alter their trips to travel March 15 or March 17, depending on the airport, without a change fee.
