Korea and U.S. begin process to deploy THAAD

Foreign minister Wang Yi said North Korea and the United States were like two trains racing towards each other.

North Korea sparked a new wave of worldwide condemnation today after firing four missiles towards Japan. Despite Chinese protests, the US and South Korean governments have pushed forward with deployment of the Thaad battery, citing North Korea's continued provocations.

The launch appeared to be a protest of joint military drills by South Korea and the US, South Korea's military said.

On Monday, North Korea test-launched four ballistic missiles into the ocean near Japan, apparently in response to a annual military exercise now underway involving thousands of U.S.servicemembers and hundreds of thousands of South Korean troops.

"New Zealand strongly urges North Korea to cease such tests and abide by its worldwide obligations".

North Korea's state-controlled Korean Central News Agency said the launches, overseen by Kim, involved artillery units tasked with striking USA bases in Japan.

Pyongyang fired four ballistic missiles into the sea off Japan's northwest coast on Monday, angering South Korea and Japan, days after it promised retaliation over U.S. While the two countries see these drills as purely defensive, North Korea views them as a provocation and a preparation for a war against the country. The two condemned the launches and agreed to boost co-operation to get the North to face more effective sanctions and pressures, according to South Korea's presidential office.

The U.S. and South Korea first announced the deployment of a THAAD system in the latter last July, a move which drew quick condemnation from China.

Earlier on Monday (6 March), the North Korean ambassador to the United Nations sent a letter to the security council complaining about the joint exercises between South Korea and the U.S. that have begun.

The measures include the planned deployment to South Korea of a missile defense system called Thaad, which has infuriated China, the North's key diplomatic ally and crucial to efforts to persuade it to change its ways.

The South Korean military said that "several missiles" were filed into the Sea of Japan, .

This is the second missile challenge from North Korea since U.S. President Donald Trump was sworn in. South Korean news agency Yonhap reported that Chinese authorities had shut 39 of Lotte's retail outlets in the country, citing fire-safety concerns.
