Facebook Begins Flagging Fake News

Facebook Begins Flagging Fake News

No word yet as to how this will affect the story's performance on Facebook's algorithm, but flagged news will remain on your feed, with a little red caution icon below it and a link to read why it's disputed and by whom. These stories are then reviewed by Snopes and/or PolitiFact and, if they find the story to be factually incorrect, it will be marked as disputed on the platform.

Facebook incurred the wrath of users frustrated by the many hoax news stories surrounding the 2016 election.

Flagging fake news on Facebook as disputed articles will ideally drive users to be more diligent and check the content itself and its source before sharing.

- Either Facebook's users have to report the story as bogus, or Facebook's software has to catch something odd about it. President Trump has famously, repeatedly used the term "fake news" to dismiss criticism by the press, usually in all caps.

Annapolis Police Investigating Bomb Threat At Jewish Day School
US President Donald Trump reportedly said that a wave of threats against Jewish communal institutions may be a false flag. The most recent rash on Monday resulted in the evacuations of hundreds of pre-school children and senior citizens.

In the help page uploaded by Facebook regarding disputed articles on the social network, the company said that the "disputed" label will be attached to fake news articles.

Those organizations will be signatories to a "Fact-checkers' Code of Principles" maintained by the journalism nonprofit Poynter Institute. In November, a source told Gizmodo that the social network's fight against fake news before the election was undercut by a "fear about upsetting conservatives". The current review process is created to ensure that Facebook operates exclusively as a platform while the responsibility for defining "fake news" relies on Facebook's partnered fact-checkers. Calling something "disputed" isn't the same as calling something "fake". A screenshot that was taken by Gizmodo reporter Anna Merlan of an article by The Seattle Tribune showed that Snopes and PolitiFact dispute the story, but for an article that was published on February 26, it was not until March 3, when PolitiFact got to the article after Snopes, that the label was applied.

Most of us tend to get our daily bit of news through social media platforms.

Fake news did not stop after Trump's historic upset. The Associated Press will also be a fact-checking partner.
