Avian Flu detected in Tennessee chickens

Avian Flu detected in Tennessee chickens

It's been a few years since a widespread avian flu outbreak hit US poultry farmers hard, prompting national egg shortages and higher prices for products. The affected flock is being depopulated to stop potential spread of illness, and officials are testing and monitoring other flocks within the quarantined area.

Department of agriculture is not identifying the farm, but says it is in Lincoln County, just west of Chattanooga.

Holton insists this is not a "food safety concern", adding people should continue to buy chicken, turkey and eggs.

The limits will reduce the potential for major USA chicken companies, such as Tyson Foods Inc and Pilgrim's Pride, to sell poultry overseas.

Russian jets mistakenly bomb US-backed forces in Syria: Pentagon
USA forces were in the area - about three miles away - when the airstrikes took place, though no Americans were hit. Russian jets on Wednesday accidentally bombed US-backed forces in Syria, a top USA general said Wednesday .

"The virus was detected on a single farm after experiencing increased mortality, and depopulation of the birds on the farm is complete", said Ashley Peterson, Ph.D., NCC senior vice president of scientific and regulatory affairs. The losses of the birds pushed US egg prices to a record high and prompted trading partners to ban imports of American poultry. The agriculture ministry also prohibited poultry and eggs imports from Spain where an occurrence of the highly contagious H5N8 bird flu virus was observed since February 24. This strain appears different from an outbreak in 2015 in the midwest, and no transmission to humans was reported then. Shows were cancelled in 2015 amid concerns raised during a national avian flu outbreak. Chicken flocks are culled as a preventive measure, often boosting the price of chicken and eggs at the supermarket. While poultry producers across Europe and Asia have also been grappling with the virus in recent months, Brazil, the world's largest chicken exporter, has so far remained untouched.

The statement said the most recent USA detection of HPAI was in January 2016 in a commercial turkey flock in Indiana.

The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services is urging commercial bird growers and backyard flock owners to use strict biosecurity to protect their birds. The risk of human infection is very low. "We are moving quickly and aggressively to prevent the virus from spreading".
