Jeanie Buss Blocks Brothers Attempt To Take Over Los Angeles Lakers

It's been nearly two weeks since Los Angeles Lakers part owner and President Jeanie Buss turned the sports world upside down when she announced the firings of GM Mitch Kupchak and her brother Jim Buss.

In papers filed Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Jeanie Buss maintains that her brother Johnny "with the active participation of (brother) Jim breached the express terms of the trust that require them to take all actions reasonably available to them to ensure that (Jeanie) remains the controlling owner of the Lakers".

To prevent the meeting, Jeanie Buss' attorneys were granted a temporary restraining order in court on Friday.

The subsequent counter strike from Jim Buss, along with Johnny, was to try to elect a new Lakers board of directors next week. Her attorneys withdrew the motion for the restraining order, as well.

Her brothers' lawyer stated that the brother's had hope that the matter would be dealt with privately and not in court.

The two brothers later said they weren't actually attempting a power grab, but Jeanie's attorney hinted at a long legal battle ahead.

"I want to make sure that they don't try to do this thing again", Jeanie Buss' lawyer Adam Streisand told ESPN.

"This is about Dr. Buss' intention, Dr. Buss' directive that it's to be Jeanie and Jeanie alone is the controlling owner of the Lakers", Streisand said.

Jerry Buss died in 2013. In order for her to remain the controlling owner, she has to be a member of that board, according to the Times. "This is a legal strategy doomed for failure". He also described her decision to go to court unwarranted.

The Lakers have won 16 National Basketball Association titles.

According to NBA.com, the recent friction between the Buss siblings stem from personnel changes Jeanie has made in recent months. The Lakers legend replaced Jim, who was sacked from his job as vice president of basketball operations. She then hired Magic Johnson to fill the high-powered role.
