So Long Eggs, Twitter's Letting People Mute You All

As the company's user and revenue growth stagnated and public backlash increased, Twitter began to address complaints, rolling out more updates in the past few months than it has in the past few years.

Twitter is to add new safety features which it says will make it easier to mute offensive content and users on the social media site. As part of its initiative to be tough on those who abuse others on its platform, Twitter today announced that it has improved its muting controls which enable users to keep abusers away.

Another new feature: Twitter users' ability to mute certain keywords, phrases, or entire conversations from their timeline for as long as they want. Ho explained how Twitter already implemented some methods of detecting abusive accounts even if their problematic behavior hasn't been reported by other users.

"We're learning a lot as we continue our work to make Twitter safer - not just from the changes we ship but also from the mistakes we make, and of course, from feedback you share", wrote Ho. Twitter said Wednesday that it's working to identify accounts engaging in abusive behavior even if no one has reported them. There are times when I'll receive a message from someone offering to help me get more followers and immediately after I report the account, the service confirms receipt and will eventually send me a push notification of action it's taken such as removing the offending account.

The company has been criticised in the past for not doing enough to protect users, as well as the way it handles reports of abuse on the site.

Earlier this month, Twitter rolled out a brand new update wherein it committed itself to preventing bullies on its platform by stopping the creation of new, abusive accounts.

At Least 180 Companies Already Want To Help Trump Build The Wall
The businessman added it is unclear what other companies might participate or what demand would exist for the wall's cement. That said, Trump insists he will make Mexico pay for the construction, something the Mexican government says won't happen.

Accounts identified by algorithms and found to be in violation of Twitter's rules will have their functions and reach limited temporarily, the company said.

"If one high-profile celebrity dumps Twitter because of abusive people, we could see a number of fans stop using it, too", he said.

Twitter is now trying to close the loop on some of those cases, promising more "transparency and openness of our reporting process".

While the updates are seemingly comprehensive, Jan Dawson, chief analyst at Jackdaw Research, said Twitter shouldn't "get a free pass" now that it has made a decision to take action after "years of freakish prevarication". During these time-outs, only a user's followers will only see their tweets.

In addition to extending the mute option to the main timeline, Twitter is putting abusive accounts on timeout, putting a lid on eggs and updating people about the accounts or tweets they report.
