Will I Go Bald? Genetic Study Shows Complex Answer

Many novel gene signals were gauged by the genetic engineers involved in the study. The scientists said they would expect to see even stronger genetic associations with hair loss if they were able to include information about which men experienced early onset hair loss. More to the point for those anxious about it is the second half of this sentence: "The results of this study might help identify those at greatest risk of hair loss, and also potential genetic targets for intervention", says a study co-author, per NBC News.

The researchers in the new study were also able to use their set of genetic markers to predict men's chances of severe hair loss, although the scientists noted that their results apply more to large populations of people than to any given individual.

In the present study, researchers found that 14 percent of the participants with a submedian genetic score had severe MPB, and 39 percent had no hair loss. Most are fated to at least have their hair thin out.

The researchers analyzed the DNA data of 52,000 men who participated in BioBank, a massive British genetic experiment, to carry out the study. "However, these results take us one step closer", says Ricardo Marioni, co-author of the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Genomic and Experimental Medicine. About 14 percent of the genes could be traced to the X chromosome - one of the sex-determining chromosomes - that the men received from their mother at conception.

It was one of many genes pinpointed on the X; in a statement, co-author Saskia Hagenaars, a Ph.D. student, said, "It was interesting to find that numerous genetics signals for male pattern baldness came from the X chromosome, which men inherit from their mothers".

Toshiba remains committed to United Kingdom nuclear project for now
Stricter safety standards after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear accident in Japan added to the cost of plants in China and the U.S. Relegation would make it "tougher for the company to attract investors" and so make its troubled turnaround even more hard .

In a paper published in PLOS Genetics, a team of researchers from the University of Edinburgh explain that they have pinpointed 287 genetic regions associated with this form of baldness.

When compared with men's medical records, those in the top 10 per cent for these genes had moderate to severe hair loss in nearly two-thirds of cases.

However, this new study shows that male baldness may relate more to genes from the maternal side than previously thought. "The findings pave the way for an improved understanding of the genetic causes of hair loss". The findings could provide possible targets for drug development to treat baldness, according to the researchers. The X chromosome was the main culprit behind male pattern baldness.

"It was interesting to find that numerous genetic signals for male pattern baldness came from the X chromosome, which men inherit from their mothers", Hagenaars said in a statement.
