Disney lands director Niki Caro to helm live-action 'Mulan'

Disney's live-action Mulan remake may have found its director in 2005's film drama North Country helmer Niki Caro. Disney previously signed Caro to direct the 2015 inspirational sports movie "McFarland, USA", which tells the story of a football coach who finds a new objective as the coach of a high school cross-country team consisting of poor Latino boys in central California.

Meanwhile, Bill Kong has been lined up as executive producer. Caro is also involved with Netflix's adaptation of Anne of Green Gables, directing the two-hour premiere episode of the series. In the meantime: how you guys feeling about Caro for this gig?

The Disney live-action remake machine thunders steadily forward, with Beauty and the Beast set to hit cinemas next month. Disney previously worked with Caro, a New Zealand native, on the 2015 cross-country drama McFarland, USA, for which she lived in central California for almost a year to immerse herself in the Mexican-American community there. All eyes are on Disney (and now Caro) to get this right. The studio will be collaborating closely with Chinese cultural consultants and its own China-based team.

Where do you want Call of Duty to go next?
The Infinite Warfare trailer has become the second-most disliked video on YouTube for apparently straying too far from series expectations.

According to Variety, the film has been fast-tracked in terms of production with Jurassic World screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver having penned the latest script.

No release date has been scheduled for the live-action Mulan as of yet. The studio had primarily pursued an Asian director for the project, meeting with Ang Lee and Rogue One star Jiang Wen, a hit director in his native China.

Last fall, controversy for a short time arose when reports textured that the original spec that Disney purchased, written by Lauren Hynek and Elizabeth Martin, featured non-Chinese characters, including a white male lead. THR has also reported that the casting search is primarily focusing on mainland China, including the title role itself.
