Joey Porter charges reduced, still on leave from Pittsburgh Steelers

The Allegheny County District Attorney's office says it will pursue only summary disorderly conduct and summary public drunkenness charges against Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter after reviewing video of a scuffle Sunday outside a Pittsburgh bar.

Officers say the arrest took place around 9:30 p.m., just hours after the Steelers' 30-12 victory over the Dolphins in the opening round of the National Football League playoffs.

District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. said that after viewing surveillance video, he chose to drop charges of aggravated assault involving a police officer and a simple assault charge for Porter's actions Sunday involving a bouncer, as well as charges of resisting arrest and defiant trespass.

Porter is also charged with simple assault, for his alleged contact with the bouncer, along with resisting arrest, defiant trespass, disorderly conduct and public drunkenness. Officer Abel has faced, but was never found guilty of assault and DUI charges in the past, according to The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Retailers post record Christmas sales
Three of the Big 4 have lost out on market share this Christmas period, as the discounters continue to challenge their dominance. Supermarket sales grew by 1.8pc over the period as shoppers splashed out over Christmas, according to Kantar.

Officer Abel wrote that Porter released him and then backed into East Carson Street, saying at various times, "No! No!" Porter's attorney says they didn't file a complaint about the officer's conduct. Pittinger said neither Porter's fame nor Abel's history will matter in the investigation. Schubert said he reviewed unspecified videos Sunday, including some recorded by Abel's body camera, in reaching that conclusion.

Chief Schubert said he understands the increased attention this incident is receiving.

Mayor Bill Peduto said Porter's case will be handled like any other. We have been and will continue to be in communication with the National Football League as is required by the Personal Conduct Policy. "Obviously, it's a disappointing one, an unfortunate one and one that we are dealing with, and we are dealing with it in an appropriate manner", Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said at the start of his weekly Tuesday press conference. The team is scheduled to play Kansas City in the AFC divisional-round playoff game Sunday.
