La La Land lands 11 BAFTA nominations

It took La La Land - which has already seen him win this year's Golden Globe for best actor - for Gosling to finally get the golden invitation to the biggest film awards outside the USA, earning his first-ever BAFTA nomination.

The Hollywood musical, which won all seven categories in which it was nominated at the Golden Globe awards, is up for Best Film, Original Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Costume Design and Sound.

The contenders for the prestigious British Film and Television awards (BAFTA) have been announced. Taking top honors in the Best Film category were "Arrival" and "La La Land", as well as "I, Daniel Blake", "Manchester by the Sea", and "Moonlight".

Gosling has been nominated for an Oscar once before (for "Half-Nelson") but will face stiff competition from Casey Affleck, whose performance as a man living with grief and guilt in "Manchester By the Sea" - also released this weekend - has been hailed as a career-best.

After grabbing the world's attention with her anti-Trump speech at the Globes, Meryl Streep is once again among the nominees for best actress, for her role in "Florence Foster Jenkins".
