United Kingdom will have control over borders after Brexit: May

London's top-flight index pushed to an all-time high after sterling collapsed following hints from Prime Minister Theresa May that Britain may opt for a so-called "hard Brexit".

May highlighted that control of immigration was uppermost for her government, pointing towards a "hard" Brexit.

She said that Brexit provided an "opportunity to fundamentally change Britain for the better". "The only real question that remains is whether the transition will be gradual (and, hence, orderly) or abrupt".

It was also a cent lower against the euro at just under €1.16. "She is right that issues of trade and immigration are not binary because when Britain leaves the single market and the customs union, though freedom of movement will cease, Britain's ability to trade with the EU and access the single market will continue".

Theresa May has signalled that she is preparing for a "hard Brexit" by pulling Britain out of the European Union single market by 2019.

Sterling fell 0.9 percent to as low as $1.2164, its weakest against the dollar since the end of October.

"I'm tempted to say the people who are getting it wrong are those who print things saying I'm talking about a hard Brexit, [that] it's absolutely inevitable it's a hard Brexit".

"We do not yet know what the government will set as negotiating objectives for the U.K.'s relationship with the European Union after exit", Ivan Rogers wrote in a goodbye note to staffers.

CNN reports that any such move might break a key promise of Trump's campaign, while Politico quote Republican Rep. In addition, CNN reported on Friday morning that Trump is asking Congress, not Mexico, to pay for the wall.

Many U.K. businesses - especially in London's huge financial-services sector - argue that access to the single market is vital.

May has faced continuous criticism from pro-Europe politicians and remain supporters over her failure to discuss her Brexit strategy, insisting she will not show her negotiating hand in advance.

"So the question is: what is the right relationship for the United Kingdom to have with the European Union when we are outside?"

When grilled on whether her exit negotiation demands will include staying in the free trade area, she replied: "We're leaving, we're coming out".

"We have a once in a generation chance to step back and ask ourselves, what sort of country do we want to be", she said.

On Monday, Mrs May will press ahead with her domestic agenda by unveiling extra help for children with mental health problems in her first speech of the year.

In particular, May attacked the failure of "mainstream, centre-ground politics" to respond to public concerns in recent years, which had resulted in people turning to "the politics of division and despair".

The president-elect is due to be sworn in on January 20 but this week there will be Senate confirmation hearings for a number of his top administration nominees, including secretary of state and attorney general, that should provide a test of his ability to work with fellow Republicans in Congress.
