Multiple Fatalities Reported In Airport Shooting In Fort Lauderdale, Fla

Five people were killed, and eight are now being treated for injuries at local hospitals.

A suspect is in custody after a shooting at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Friday, Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief told CNN.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, in a 3:25 p.m. press briefing, said it appeared the man in custody worked alone, but law enforcement was methodically searching all terminals and parking areas to make sure there was no further threat.

"Yes - we are at Fort Lauderdale airport. Anyone who observes any suspicious activity should report it to airport personnel or police", Guglielmi said in an email. U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson told multiple news stations that the suspect is 26-year-old Esteban Santiago, an American citizen born in New Jersey. Law enforcement did not fire shots.

Witnesses said the male shooter emptied several magazines of bullets, then dropped to the floor spread-eagled to await arrest. Federal Aviation Administration officials said the south side of the airport is operating but not the north side - where the incident happened.

At least 5 people have been killed and 8 others wounded, the department said. Mr Schilcher said he did not assume it was safe until he saw a police officer standing over him.

Air Canada said it had no record of any passenger with the name of the suspect or of any checked guns on any of its Friday's flights to the USA city.

However, people from the besieged west, which is still under the militants control, are increasingly attempting to escape. That had helped stem casualties, which the government does not report but sources said on some days reached a few dozen.

The melee, which erupted around 1 p.m. EST, brought air traffic to a standstill at the heavily traveled airport.

She adds, "People left their stuff inside and just ran". They say it will remain closed for an extended period of time. Flights that were already within 50 miles of the airport were being allowed to land, but other scheduled flights will be delayed or diverted.

The airport said the incident broke out in the baggage claim area of Terminal 2. "The safety of our customers and employees is our deepest core value, and we are providing our complete support to authorities as the situation develops".

A statement from a Florida official that the shooter had travelled to Florida on a Canadian flight sent officials in Ottawa scrambling, but Global Affairs Canada and the Department of National Defence said they were not aware of any requests for assistance from us authorities.

This is a developing story.

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, who was in the airport at the time of the shooting, sent out two tweets relating to the incident.
