Apple Obeys Beijing, Removes New York Times App From China Store

Chinese Apple customers looking to download the New York Times app through the tech giant's App Store are out of luck, as the company has pulled the news app at the request of the Chinese government. Case in point: Apple has removed the New York Times app from its China store. But analysts say that even with that expectation, Apple's record $240 billion in App Store purchases on New Year's Day is noteworthy.

The New York Times attributes the request to pull the app to new regulations officially created to curb activities "such as endangering national security, disrupting social order and violating the legitimate rights and interests of others".

According to the Times, the Chinese government has been taking steps to block the publication in the country since a series of articles in 2012 highlighted the hidden wealth of then-Prime Minister Wen Jiabao and his family.

Apple said January 1, 2017, was the biggest single day of sales ever for the App Store with almost $240 million in purchases, which came after it generated more than $3 billion in December - its best month to date. Apps by other worldwide publications such as The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times, however, remain available in China's App Store. The Times' crossword puzzle and VR apps also remain available throughout China.

A few Chinese media outlets on Thursday published short reports on the app removals. Holiday spend was also at record levels, Apple said, with purchases from the App Store topping $3 billion (approximately Rs. 20,381 crores) in December.

The Times had asked Apple to reconsider its decision, to no avail.

China has many times censored several USA based websites and newspapers, and there is no doubt in this fact. However, the app was a more hard proposition because it wasn't technically under their control. It also means that a total of $60 billion has been paid out to developers since the App Store launched in 2008 - with one third of that happening in just the past year. It would seem that this has changed since both the Chinese and English versions of the news app were taken down on December 23rd.

The Chinese-language app should not affect users who have already previously downloaded it, but for readers to be able to receive new content, they would need to use the App Store of another region.
