Members of US Congress Are Overwhelmingly Christian, Study Finds

In fact, there are about as many Christians in Congress today - the 115th Congress - as there were back in the early 1960s, despite fear that the number was declining. That's significantly higher than the 75 percent of American adults who identify as Christian, and just slightly less than the 95 percent of Congress members who identified as Christian in 1961.

By contrast, the portion of American adults who call themselves Christian fell to 71 percent in 2014, the Pew report said. In comparison, only 75 percent of USA citizens follow Christianity. Today, 31 percent of Christians in the federal Congress claim to be Catholic, while Protestant affiliation has fallen to 56 percent.

The new Congress does include seven fewer Protestants, four more Catholics, and six fewer Christians as a whole. Among Republican Congress members, 291 members out of a total of 293 members are Christians.

The Christian religion dominates Democrats too.

Most Republicans identify as Christian.

Looking at each party, two-thirds, or 67 percent, of Republicans in the new Congress are Protestant and 27 percent of Republicans are Catholic.

Steelers edge Browns in overtime
You can usually tell by a player's body language that they're not in the best mood after they just got caught by the officials. The initial call of a touchdown was reversed upon replay review, and the Steelers took over at their 20 still trailing 14-7.

While the American population has seen a steady slippage in the percentage of people who identify themselves as Christians, that trend is not evident on Capitol Hill. Among the 242 Democrats, 28 identify as Jewish, three as Hindus, two as Muslims and one as a Unitarian Universalist. She represents an increasing number of USA citizens who continue to be underrepresented on the seat of democracy.

In addition, the 10 members who declined to state their religious affiliation are all Democrats.

Despite major changes in the American religious landscape in recent decades, the Congress's Christian majority has barely wavered in the last 50 years.

The Congress has remained unvaried overall from a religious standpoint.

The percentage of Americans who have no religion has grown, but the portion of voters who said in exit polls that they have no religion is lower than the share of the general public, said Greg Smith, a Pew expert on the US religious landscape.

The study also found that some religious groups including Protestants, Catholics and Jews have greater representation in Congress than in the general population.
